You can say Through the Eyes of the Dead made deathcore cool to like. Through the Eyes of the Dead don’t put out pussy deathcore music. Oh no, these South Carolina residents give its listeners a reason burst out in a random mosh pit.

If you haven’t broken into a random mosh yet over the fact that I am reviewing the latest Through the Eyes of the Dead album, Skepsis, then you better do so. Skepsis is a straight forward deathcore release that takes the band down a new path in their career, both with the genre and how they stand as a whole.

Skepsis is taking the band down a more straight death metal path. When Through the Eyes of the Dead isn’t giving Skepsis listeners technical death metal music they are doing something different with the deathcore genre. The breakdowns have this weird way of setting the mood for the whole song, almost like that part is telling a story and not the vocals.

Of course with all death metal related music you have to add in some melodic-ness to please new fans/piss off old fans. The only parts that are melodic are the guitar parts, which sound a lot like At the Gates. Oh shit we have a double edged sword here. Skepsis has some of the best guitar work within the deathcore genre but at the same time they are nearly ripping off At the Gates, giving them that almost straight death metal sound I also brought up.

Still with that bull shit aside I have to say that Danny Rodriguez is one vocalist in the genre that I respect a lot. His vocals give me this evil grin on my face, like I am ready to bash some bodies face in. The way Rodriguez changes from the deep, low growls to these high pitch vocals is astonishing. He can do it so well especially in The Manifest, one of my favorite tracks on the entire album.

Final Verdict
Being one of the best in your genre is tough because when the next album comes out you have better up yourself or your going to loose that number one position. Through the Eyes of the Dead still have a strong lead in the deathcore genre and now they are breaking into the death metal genre. Skepsis is a fucking brutal album that should not be missed, even though it has that double edged sword aspect to it.
