If you were to tell me that Aeternam signing with Metal Blade back in May of 2009 I would have not cared. The band was unknown to me at the time and truthfully there are so many good bands out there now. Why would I want to invest into this Aeternam band? Easy, they make all those other goods bands I enjoy look mediocre.

Aeternam is a five piece melodic death metal band. Their first release through Metal Blade, Disciples of the Unseen, is not recreating the genre but it does make them a power house in it. I mean for one thing this is the first album in a long time where the introduction track actually matters. The 1 minute and 51 second track, Ars Almadel, sets up the rest of this beast of an album. One after another Aeternam delivers!

The vocal style is kept to growls mostly. At times there are well placed clean vocals, most of which can be heard in the almost chant-song Iteru. Even after a song that some might disapprove of; Aeternam follows it up with Goddess of Masr. I could rave again on how good this track is but now I might be getting to the point where I have to shove this record down your throat. It is that good!

The instrumentation on this release puts Aeternam on top of the mountain for 2010 as of now. Even though we just started 2010 there are only maybe a few bands that could knock them down. The band as a whole plays off of each others work real well. When we are treated to a soothing guitar solo on any of the tracks, keyboardist Samuel Dubois is right there, whipping out this dark sound that pulls you into the music.

Final Verdict
What a great way to start the year. Not only for melodic death metal fans, but for Metal Blade Records as well. This is a really good release, especially as a first release from Aeternam. I see a lot of good things coming their way so you better jump on the band wagon now.
