The fourth full length release from one of America’s most brutal bands is
here. The Harvest Floor is nothing we have ever heard before from Cattle
Decapitation. A lot has changed since the bands Karma.Bloody.Karma album and in
overall reaction is beyond any words imaginable.
Cattle Decapitation is known for their extreme music and lyrical content. A
normal individual would think nothing of the band because of their deathgrind
style of music. If you listen real hard you can hear how the bands music is
about such aspects as animal cruelty and…well maybe that is the only real good
aspect because these vegetarians really hate animal killers.
The first thing I noticed about The Harvest Floor was the real melodic-like
opening track. It had the general Cattle Decapitation sound, but it was better
than normal. Even when the album gets to the half way mark I was still amazed
with the sound. Cattle Decapitation finally expanded their sound into something
other than the same old deathgrind music. I’ve always enjoyed these guys but
they really needed to try something new and they finally did.
Travis Ryan didn’t go to the dark side with his vocals. His growls are still low
and fast during the right moments. Like all the other releases from these guys
the band still does a real nice job at playing their instruments in key with
Ryan’s voice. Certain growls go hand-in-hand with guitar riffs and breakdowns,
it’s phenomenal.
The latest drummer to the mix is David McGraw. Cattle Decapitation can never
seem to keep a drummer for too long. I don’t think McGraw is the best drummer
the bands had but he is still a pretty good choice. There are tracks where I
think Michael Laughlin could have done a much better job.
Final Verdict
It sounds like we have a winner from Cattle Decapitation. Fans of deathgrind
music will find lot here on this 37 minute album. It may have taken way too long
for Cattle Decapitation to expand on their sound but that is ok, The Harvest
Floor is a top notch release and that is all that matters.
