The Wii has its fair share of sports compilation games. Destineer didn’t get
the memo that the best sports compilation game is Wii Sports, which comes with
Wii for free. Instead of offering anything breathtaking, Paradise Island is full
of those sports games that only sound cool when said once.
Paradise Island comes packed with seven games. Basketball, croquet, lawn darts,
badminton, volleyball, horse shoes, and mini-golf make up the game selection.
The developers knew that basketball was the key to this game so they included
two versions of it. One played on an island court and the other in what looks to
be either a driveway or a school parking lot. Croquet is probably the selling
point to this game, since it’s so random, but croquet is pretty bad.
Before you can start playing the games you have to make a profile. One neat
thing that was added in this game was achievements you can earn in each game.
Earning these points is nearly impossible and thankfully you don’t unlock
anything if you earn any of these. This is just a way to get more from the game
and trust me you need this.
Croquet, lawn darts, badminton, volleyball, horse shoes, and mini-golf all have
terrible controls. Either the Wii Mote is way too sensitive before you hit or
throw your object or the game is out to make you loose. I played a 45 minute
game of lawn darts against the computer and the only reason I lost is because
the computer kept going over the winning number (15 I think, I can’t remember).
Your computer teammate has to be the dumbest person in the world. They play just
as bad as you or worse. Earning a victory in any of these games I mentioned
above is impossible because they control as good as every other bad Wii game. It
doesn’t work out and somebody at Destineer must have known this.
There are two versions of basketball in this game. Basketball has three game
types, shot clock, around the world, and HORSE. Both basketball modes have
these, the only difference are the backgrounds. It makes no sense why the
developers would both making two separate sections for the same group of mini
games.
Just like every other third party game you can not add in your Mii creations in
this game. Instead you get to pick from a wide selection of men and women, all
of whom make no different in the games. Pick whomever you want; it doesn’t
matter when you can’t swing the Wii Mote to hit a damn volleyball.
The graphics make things even better too. Paradise Island has N64 era graphics,
from the grass to the stupid birds flying the 5 point signs in lawn darts.
Nothing in this game will blow you away; Paradise Island is another half assed
game even in the graphics department.
Final Verdict
For an expensive game you would expect a whole lot more. Paradise Island is
another dud, the game offers new kinds of mini games, but they are impossible to
play. If you want golf then buy a different Wii game, same goes for basketball.
Whatever you do please don’t torture your friends and family with this game,
they’ll disown you.
