The game has the story of an RPG but it was a shooter. Before Square made the
original Final Fantasy on the NES they created King’s Knight, their first game
on the NES. Back in the day this game wasn’t half bad, but now things are a
whole lot different.
I remember playing this game before and enjoying it. What the hell was I
thinking? King’s Knight is one of the worst games Square has ever created. The
game shows potential before you hit the start button. Once you hit that button
the game is all down hill.
Instead of taking place in space Square went ahead and slapped on some wizards
and warriors throughout the game. They also managed to slap on some horrible
gameplay as well. Boy did they add in a lot of horrible gameplay…
There are four characters in King’s Knight and you never get to pick your
favorite one. You start the game as Ray Jack the Knight in a mountain like
stage. Throughout this stage and every other stage you pick up power ups and
kill hordes of monsters. For some reason the power ups don’t seem to do jack
shit. Half the time I don’t even pick them up because some of them will kill you
right away.
Stage two has you playing as Kaliva the Wizard, the third is Barusa the Monster
and the fourth one is Toby the Thief. Every stage is pretty much the same,
different backgrounds with the same creators, just with a different color
scheme. If you can manage to complete every stage with these four warriors you
will have an easier time to beat the final stage.
The final stage? Oh yes people there is a fifth stage in this game. You need to
use teamwork to beat this difficult stage. Dodging enemies is nearly impossible.
Square gives you the opportunity to switch out your characters, which in reality
just gives you more chances to try and beat this stage. If you enter this stage
with anything below three you will never beat this stage. I’m not lying, it is
nearly impossible to beat the last stage.
One of the worst parts of this game is its difficulty. Trying to get one
character to the final stage is hard enough. The only way to stand a chance with
this game is using a turbo controller. This way you can keep shooting the
breakable objects and you’ll find a secret passage. If you find a secret passage
you better take it because it let’s you skip most of the stage.
So if you find the secret passage you’re safe, right? No because Square makes
you battle enemies in these passages. For some reason the enemies never stop
coming and they keep shooting their missiles. The easiest way to beat this game
is by not even putting it on.
King’s Knight is one player game, which makes little sense. Since you can play
as all of the characters at the end, if you can get there, it would have made
logical sense to let other players join in. It might have made the game more
enjoyable if another player could join in. At least this way another person
could share the same amount of rage that’s going through your body.
Final Verdict
There is a reason why Final Fantasy was the last project Square thought they
would ever make. Most of the games released before Final Fantasy were bad.
King’s Knight is one of those bad games. The game as a whole doesn’t even last
thirty minutes, but trying to beat the game is impossible. Only pick this one up
if you are a collector, but make sure you don’t buy this on the Virtual Console.
