Ah a 2-D fighting collection for the Playstation 2. These sorts of games are not uncommon any more. Companies of the past put together a bunch of their games and release it for the public to buy. It happens all the time, but should you spend your money on this one?

Let’s get a raise of hands on the people who liked the World Heroes fighting series. Anyone? How about the first game, it was pretty cool, right? That’s what I thought.

World Heroes Anthology is a lame excuse of an anthology. Not too many people even know there was a sequel to the first game. It turns out there were four of these games. Where did they come from?

For the few that enjoy this series World Heroes Anthology is a collection worth $20. All of the games are here with training in each of them now, something we didn’t see in the originals. Other than that new addition there isn’t anything else here.

You get four fighting games with new characters here and there. Most of the characters in this game look a lot like famous people. Wait did I just see Hulk Hogan or am I loosing it because I only paid $20 for this game?

Some of the biggest problems World Heroes dealt with were the characters and the story. Even Battle Arena Toshinden 3 had better characters than this. But hey at least Dr. Brown made a device and gathered the best heroes from history. Oh wait a minute now everything makes sense. The Viking is from some random time period and Rasputin just wants to kick some ass. I get it now…wait no I don’t.

The game is fully loaded with special attacks. All of these can be done with the d-pad, which is nice since most fighters now have complex moves that take forever to learn. If you’ve played any 2-D fighting game before then you can pick this up and enjoy it without any problems. Enjoying this game might be stretching it really.

It is nice to see how the game has progressed through these four games. Little things were added to later editions. The biggest improvement was the addition of the dash, which really didn’t offer too much to gameplay. World Heroes Anthology just feels sluggish from the beginning.

World Heroes has some pretty weak graphics. Even when you compare this game to Street Fighter II or Fatal Fury you can see the lack of everything. Character models are too simple and the animations for special moves look unrealistic. I know throwing projectiles is pretty unrealistic, but at least Ryu and Ken made it look good.

Final Verdict
If you own a Playstation 2 and you love World Heroes then you’re in luck. This game isn’t for fans of any 2-D fighter. It lacks a lot of things that we see in most other 2-D fighting games. Though for $20 you can’t complain too much, before you know it this game will be reduced to nothing.
