Computer game sales have taken a turn for the worst in November 2007. Sales for both the two major FPS games, Unreal Tournament 3 and Crysis, both had dismal sales. There is no need to worry though both these games are good and that’s why the Playstation 3 has the honor to have Unreal Tournament 3 released first on their console. Regardless what PC fans say both versions of these games look identical and that is something Sony needs right now.

I was a little worried even before I tried this game since it wasn’t suppose to come out until mid 2008 on the Playstation 3. There hasn’t been a game pushed forward this much for a long time and there isn’t anything wrong at all. Unreal Tournament 3 is a strong FPS, but it slacks a little with its single player mode.

Unreal Tournament 3 is mainly an online game. There is a story mode for the single player experience and the cut scenes are done real well. Think Gears of War with more armor on the heroes. The aliens sort of remind me of Gears of War too; actually a lot of everything in UT3 reminds me of Gears of War. The story is different however. Really I don’t know what the story is to tell the truth, you just fight in team death matches and once you get a certain amount of kills you win.

The single player campaign mainly serves as a stepping stone to all the mayhem you’ll encounter online. Some times when playing UT3 offline your teammates are a bit too stupid. You may have to play some levels more than once sine their skills may not be like yours. Whenever you can get use to Unreal Tournament 3 it’s best to go right online. This game really is not for anybody that is lacking the Internet, it is almost pointless.

What you see with Unreal Tournament 3 is pretty much the same you’d see on the PC version. The cut scenes are beautifully done too; UT3 is especially great looking on high definition televisions. Even on standard, low resolution televisions this game still looks good. UT3 is one of the best looking Playstation 3 games out right now so if you like FPS games then you have a gem available.

Since this game is meat to be played online mainly then I better tell you about it. You have some favorites here from team death match to capture the flag. All of the modes that we’ve seen for years now don’t offer too much to the formula. The only thing different UT3 has to offer, with these modes, are the weapons and power ups.

The original online mode is Warfare; it has a more tactical feel to it. Control different points and get to the enemies base. It is a lot of fun but didn’t we actually see this before, maybe Onslaught mode? Even though Unreal Tournament 3 doesn’t offer the best modes for online play it is still fun.

Surprisingly the controls are much better than the computer version. I am more of a controller person, using a mouse and keyboard on FPS games can get a little crazy at times. With the PS3 controller it works real well but I did feel like the character was moving too fast and I wasn’t really moving up on the thumb sticks too much.

Final Verdict
Unreal Tournament 3 is a lot like Call of Duty 4 in many ways. Both these games are lacking in the single player mode compared to Bioshock and their online modes are not nearly as good as Halo 3. I am not saying that both these games are bad because they’re both good. UT3 is one of those games that is nice to have around since it is fast and action packed. You can easily put this game on and play a few online matches within a few minutes. If you want a game that shows off your Playstation 3 then Unreal Tournament 3 is the perfect choice.
