A Japanese cell phone mascot has its own game in the United States? That is
really puzzling considering the last cell phone mascot based game failed big
time. Ignition Entertainment must be thinking outside of the box because they
brought over Boing! Docomodake DS a short puzzle platformer that is rather
entertaining.
What can a mushroom based character do that nobody else has done before?
Nothing, but that is not the case when the game only costs $20. You are buying a
weird character based game that has around 50 levels, basic level designs, a few
real tricky puzzles and a whole lot of laughs. I could not stop laughing over
the fact that I spent $20 on a game like this. Even after all my laughter I
still found myself enjoying this game more than most full priced games.
Boing! Docomodake DS has you playing as big bad Docomodake. As the main
Docomodake you have to get the rest of your little Docomodake’s to the end of
the stage. If you tap the screen you can see the little ones and you will need
to see them to figure out some of the games puzzles. Just make sure they all
live at the end since every stage grades you on your stats.
Movement in the game will have you either using the d-pad and four buttons of
the stylus. I found myself using the stylus for the first portion of the game
because it was easy to move around by ducking, jumping, and rolling. As you
progress through the game you may find yourself switching over to the d-pad way
of things because it will make the puzzle hunting much easier and less painful.
On the bad side the mini Docomodake’s can only be controlled by the stylus and
this does cause some nerve wrecking problems. Trying to move these things in
some situations may seem way too hard. The mazes you have to put these mini guys
through is a pain. The easy way out would be to put the game away, it doesn’t
get easier and it starts pretty early in the game.
With the 50 or so levels you get there is maybe four to five hours of gameplay.
There is some reason to keep playing because you can earn coins. You can spend
the coins to unlock concept art, music and a few other things that are semi
interesting. If none of that really appeals to you then you at least have a few
hours of gameplay.
Final Verdict
Boing! Docomodake DS is well worth the asking price of $20. The game does have
its flaws but when you consider how much other DS games like this cost you will
start to see the good again in Boing! Docomodake DS.
