Retro
Game Challenge is the game that old school gamers have been waiting for. The
Japanese videogame show Game Center CX is responsible for the creation of this
game and hopefully one day the show will make it to the states. For now the
Nintendo DS will amaze us with this fantastic game.
The game starts off with Arino sending players back to the past to play games
with his childhood forum. Once trapped in the 1980s you are forced to play the
most popular games and complete various challenges sent by the present day Arino.
All of these games were his favorite when he was young so the challenges won’t
be that easy.
Retro Game Challenge takes the biggest games from yesteryear and puts in some
unique challenges. All of the games are original in ways, mainly with the
graphics, name, and a few other minor aspects. The games as a whole are just old
games with different changes, saving XSEED Games from receiving a lawsuit in the
near future.
You start the game with one retro title and as you progress you earn more. It is
a real shame that you don’t get to start with all the titles at once. Some of
the earlier titles start to get old after awhile, mainly Rally King. Most of the
challenges are easy enough to beat without any problems, but when you earn the
harder versions of the game it won’t be so easy and you have to beat that game
to move on.
While playing Retro Game Challenge you will earn magazines. Each issue gives you
hints on current and old games, codes, and some sneak peeks at future titles.
This gives Retro Game Challenge a more realistic feel to it, almost recreating
the 1980s for old school gamers. Usually it is pretty important to read these
issues to figure out what to do next, mostly with later challenges.
Each and every game has instruction manuals as well. It is funny to see all of
the details that were put in these games. Young Arino will even make jokes on
people who don’t read manuals and so fourth, it is a blast. Just make sure you
don’t play this game too long because Arino’s mom will yell.
The
best game out of all of these has to be Guardia Quest, a 10 hour plus RPG that
plays a lot like Dragon Warrior and Final Fantasy. Most of the challenges in
this game are pretty challenging so RPG fans will find a lot to enjoy here.
During gameplay you can pause the game and read the manual or magazines for
help. On the bottom screen you can see the two kids playing the current game,
full of complete motions. You can switch between the two screens where you want
to play the classic games if you want.
Final Verdict
What more can you want than full classic games on one Nintendo DS cartridge?
Retro Game Challenge is the sort of game that will be loved by hardcore gamers
for years to come. This might not be the best title for modern games but it is
worth a shot. XSEED Games might have created one of the top games of 2009
already.
