When all else fails release the classics over and over again. This is the case for Chrono Trigger, a game that has been released a few times. Chrono Trigger has gone down in history as one of the best Super Nintendo games and now for the third release it seems like new fans can enjoy this classic role playing game.

Repacking a classic game takes some guts. You usually have to add in enough new content to get old fans to buy it, yet at the same time you have to show a whole new group of people why this game is so beloved. Thankfully Sqaure Enix did add a few new things, but honestly these additions are nothing compared to what Final Fantasy III and IV got on the DS.

The plot of the game has Crono going through time with his friend Lucca. Their adventure starts after Crono meets a local princess, Marle, at the festival. When Lucca’s time machine demonstration goes wrong Crono jumps in and saves the person he just met.

You travel from present time to 65,000,000 B.C. and 2300 A.D. Chrono Trigger takes you on a journey where everything changes time. You have to make sure you know what you’re getting into before you make certain moves because the world around you may change forever.

Chrono Trigger opened up the world to a new kind of gameplay. Combining real action with turn based, Chrono Trigger has this addicting gameplay that makes you want more and more. As cool as the battles may be it is a shame that you can predict their every movement. If you stop for a minute and just watch you can pass most of the battles in the game. Since that isn’t a good idea you can always take a look and try to split up your fights, giving you the upper hand.

The battles in Chrono Trigger tend to be over in a minute or less. Leveling up in this game is way too easy and sometimes it is just fun leveling up. As you level up you will gain new attacks for your characters. With these attacks you can combine them with one or two other members. You can mix and match your characters because everyone has some sort of attack with another character, its great!

One thing Chrono Trigger did was add in details to make the game feel pretty damn good. Your teammates are always with you, something that still is not done a whole lot in role playing games. Chrono Trigger pushed the limits on the SNES when it first came out, which is why most people say this is the best game that ever came out on that system. Everything from the graphics to the music Chrono Trigger had it all.

To elaborate a little more on the music I have to say that Chrono Trigger has one of my favorite video game soundtracks of all time. From Frog’s music to the final battles tune, Chrono Trigger sounds fantastic.

So what about the new? To tell the truth I was not that impressed with the new content at all. The new dungeon doesn’t add anything new to the story, it is just sort of there for a challenge, if you want to call it that. There is a new ending that ties together Chrono Trigger and Chrono Cross which is nice. I just can’t help but think that Square Enix hurried up with this game, almost a quick port over just to make some quick money. Good game just maybe not the best choice when you have so many other great, original RPGs.

Final Verdict
If you never played Chrono Trigger then you have no soul, it’s that simple. As much as I disliked the new additions in the game I still found myself enjoying Chrono Trigger again. Fans will want to play this one for the new ending and I don’t blame them. Before you buy this one make sure you have plenty of time to kill.
