Two years ago a little puzzle game called Exit came out on the Playstation
Portable. At a discounted price and a neat concept, Exit went on to be one of
the sleeper hits of 2006. Lately the Nintendo DS has been seeing all those so
called PSP exclusives and Exit was best kept on Sony’s portable.
Exit DS is a neat action puzzle game. It might seem like an easy game but it
wasn’t. There are plenty stages to play and the stages get harder as you
progress. It seems great and all but there are some problems with the DS version
and it is mainly due to the poor controls.
The
PSP version fitted on one screen and it looked great. Exit DS fits on two
screens and it looks great. My big problem is the fact that this game is on two
screens. It gets way too hard figuring out what is going to happen next and
which survivor is where. Exit DS is border line from being a disaster, something
that usually doesn’t happen on Nintendo’s portable. If there is one thing the DS
has shown it is that two screens make Exit bad.
Our hero, Mr. ESC, is a world famous escape artist. He likes to avoid traps and
save random people. Each level Mr. ESC goes through is full of different
challenges, ranging from jumping to saving random individuals. In order to win
each stage Mr. ESC has to save everyone, even if that means jumping over pits
and putting out fires.
It’s a puzzle game, what do you expect? Exit DS doesn’t exactly win in the story
category but we usually play puzzle games for enjoyment, not for the story. If
you own the PSP version then you will notice the same story with the same cut
scenes.
This game is a perfect example on what not to do with stylus controls. Trying to
play this game with your stylus is hell. You have to tap the screen to do
everything. Half of the time it never seems to work right. Not only that, but
there are some motions that are way too hard to do. Tap on an edge to drop down,
sure I’ll get to that whenever I can climb down a ladder/rope.
You can go into the options and change the games controls. Sad to say this but
the normal controls just do not seem to be as good as the PSP version. Mr. ESC
never seems to move properly, he still moves like a robot.
Final Verdict
If you are looking for a budget Nintendo DS title that is remotely entertaining
then purchase Exit DS. Owners of the original game should pass on this one and
wait for the second game. Exit DS could have been a lot better but the
developers just didn’t seem to care.
