When
was the last time a good Sonic game came out? Not since the Dreamcast has a
Sonic game touched our hearts. The series has been lacking for years now and no
matter what Sonic Team does it seems like things get worse. Can Sonic Unleashed
break the curse or is Sonic still dead to us?
The Sonic franchise might be better off in a grave, six feet under. Sonic
Unleashed is a train wreck. SEGA tries to reinvent the series with each game and
I don’t understand why. It would be much better if the series went back to its
roots. Fans enjoyed those games. These new Sonic games, there is no reason why
anybody should spend full price on them.
Oh yeah why didn’t I mention the story? Because it is the same thing we have
seen in every other Sonic game. Egg Man is at it again and he wants to rule over
the world. While Sonic has him begging for mercy he changes Sonic into Werehog,
but this curse only happens at night. Add in some familiar faces and you have
Sonic Unleashed, a rehashed game with a new aspect that ruins the entire game.
Unleashed is broken into two parts, night and day. During the day Unleashed is a
playable game, to a point at least. Stages are almost similar to Sonic
Adventure, the last true good Sonic game. It is a real shame that every stage is
real short. None of these stages will last you more than a few minutes, ten
minutes max if you try to find all the items the stages have to offer.
Jumping around in the day stages is a problem. Sonic seems to be running on a
time delay. You have to give our hero an extra second if you want to kill an
enemy without loosing rings. Not only that you have to make sure you are jumping
at the right point so you don’t die. Like past Sonic games as well you sometimes
run faster than the camera so you just may fall off the stage and have to start
over, either from a good safe point or one that is so terribly placed that you
will be starting the stage over.
Each stage tries to offer different patches to choose. Most of them end up
colliding at the end, the main difference if the one will give you a token and
the other won’t. The developers tried to add replay value by doing this but it
is really more annoying than anything. You move way too fast during some of
these paths that you will be jumping for joy when you pass them because the
developers seemed to add in spikes that can not be avoided. This goes for
everything else too, it is no fun going back and taking those other paths.
By night you are Werehog, Sonic’s now alter ego. These stages last at least 30
minutes and at no point are they any fun. They consist of beat-em up stages with
terrible controllers that will have you crying. None of the Werehog stages are
fun, these stage ruin the entire Unleashed experience!
It
is hard to control Werehog. At times he has to “run” like Sonic and the game
figures you should be able to run that fast because you are Sonic. This leads to
painful aspects of stages where you have to be dead on with jumps. Climbing up
anything is too bad for words. You can’t just climb up things, you have to jump.
Sonic can at least skip a few steps because he is fast. Werehog just moves so
damn slow, it takes way too long to do the simplest things.
Every stage has you collecting different tokens. Also you can earn experience by
killing enemies, which lets you level up either Sonic or Werehog. It is a neat
idea but you seem to earn way too much experience when playing as Werehog.
Normally I would say that is fine because Werehog stages are bad, but after
three stages it seemed like my characters were almost maxed out. I wish I could
say this did matter though, but the thought is all we need, right?
Final Verdict
I really wish I could say this Sonic game was worth while. The asking price is
just not good enough; this game should be discounted now! It is a much bigger
improvement over the last Sonic game, but anything is better than that crap. Buy
this if you are a Sonic fan, others should pass on the blue hedgehog again.
