Any
more video games are all the same. Developers every so often think of a new idea
and they incorporate it into their product. Gamers can either see right through
this or they will be completely oblivious. Mirror’s Edge goes ahead and tries
something completely different, but is this really a game that gamers want to
play?
You play as Faith, a girl who lives in a city where change is bad. Faith is
known as a runner, an individual who is part of a group that hangs onto the past
where people could do whatever they want. Runners live on the edge and Faith is
going on a journey she might not live through. Is living in the past really
worth some body’s life?
The game plays and looks like a first person shooter for the most part. Faith is
controlled in first person mode and she can use weapons if she pleases. Mirror’s
Edge is really supposed to be played without you attacking your opponents with
weapons, you should use your hands if you must or do super cool jump kicks. The
runners are not a mean group, but if you must kill somebody you can, you’ll just
need to steal their weapon first.
Visually the game is amazing. This game will have you on the edge of your seat
as you jump from different roof tops. The speed you are running at will make you
feel like you’re on a rollercoaster. If anything this game will give you the
feel of being at an amusement park. At no point during the game did the graphics
mess up with clipping or slow down. Mirror’s Edge is a very impressive game.
As impressive as the game looks I did not care for the cut scenes. Everything
looks sloppy when the story develops. You can tell what is going on, don’t get
me wrong; it reminds me of the game XIII. Mirror’s Edge does look better in the
cut scene department but I just don’t understand why the cut scenes are so much
worse than the in-game graphics.
Mirror’s Edge went all out when it came to the music department. When the big
chase scenes are going on with Faith the music will change in a way that reminds
you of a big chase scene from a Hollywood movie. The game does have good
voice-overs too, making Mirror’s Edge one of the best sounding games in recent
memory.
Running
and jumping can get old in the game since that is the main attraction to the
game. There are numerous paths you can take throughout each stage which does
help out in ways. In the story mode it doesn’t matter a whole lot but if you go
and play the time trials you will have to find the fastest paths to get the top
score. Mirror’s Edge does throw in some curve balls that will have you
questioning where you need to go next but you’ll figure it out within minutes
really.
The games major flaw has to be the length of the game. You can literally play
this game in one sitting; it takes between 4 to 6 hours to fully complete the
story mode. The first stage alone is done before you know it and the last stage
seems to end sooner than expected. For what you pay for this game there is not a
whole lot here. It is innovated but you have to pay the price to play something
new.
Final Verdict
When it comes down to it you have to ask yourself one major question. Is it
worth paying full price for a game that takes a few hours to beat? Mirror’s Edge
is an original game and I know it is great to play something different. I would
say to wait for a price drop on this game, paying full price seems unfair.
