There has been a lot of talk about Fracture, the next big game from
publishers LucasArts. When the demo was released a few weeks it defiantly didn’t
leave a good impression. With the release of Fracture a week ago should
everybody drop what they are doing and pick up a copy of the game?
Fracture takes everything that is good from Gears of War, Halo, Too Human, and a
few other games that I can not remember at the moment. Fracture is sort of fun
for the first couple of minutes, but then you will get the urge to play all
those other games that developers Day 1 Studios obviously copied off of.
You play as Jet Brody, a member of the Atlantic Alliance. As a member of this
organization in the year 2161 Brody has to stop General Nathan Sheridan from
taking down the Alliance. It is up to Brody and his team to prevent anything
from happening and time is not on their side.
The story in Fracture is bad. The game literally throws you into the mess of
things and expects you to figure everything out after the first chapter. Hell
even during the first chapter you have to figure out a few of the games controls
on your own. The game explains how to use the terrain editing gun, the
Entrencher. Other than that you learn one or two different controls in the game,
everything else will have to be guess and check.
Fracture has a dozen or so weapons and four grenades. Most of the weapons seem
similar and the grenades each have special abilities. You can carry two guns at
a time, but with the games control scheme you’ll send up using one weapon
because you won’t switch your weapons out. The grenades on the other hand are
useful but I have some problems with them. Certain grenades are supposed to
advance you in the game by raising the terrain and so fourth. I think it is safe
to say Day 1 Studios programmed certain areas to have their land raised. I kid
you not I was stuck at one part trying to get a grate to raise up for 20
minutes. That is not fun, that is annoying.
The game just feels incomplete at points. With the whole terrain raising aspect
you will feel like you’re create the level to complete it. Trust me the raise
and lowering of the land around you gets old real fast. Trying to raise the
terrain, to have crates as your stairs, is annoying and tedious. It also doesn’t
help that the spawn points for enemies seem to happen at the worst points,
causing you to continue from your last save point.
Speaking of spawn points Fracture has huge problems with this aspect. No matter
what difficult you pick there are problems. A group of enemies will gang up on
you and even before you can pick up their ammo another group appears from no
where. Not only that most of the time the enemies you killed will have different
guns so you will need to waste an extra second or two to pick up a new weapon.
This is a real problem, thankfully picking up ammo only takes a second or less
and yes you do have to hit a button to pick ammo up. Get ready to get your ass
handed to you in this game.
All of the enemies in this game seem to be the same. The so called bosses in
this game do look different but it turns out the so called boss battles are
easier than fighting off hordes of enemies. Just shoot your gun and hear the
same death sounds, it might not sound like a problem but those death sounds are
annoying.
Fracture is disappointing when it comes to graphics. This game could pass as a
glorified Playstation 2 game; it does not have the same appeal as the last game
LucasArts put out. There are constant framerate problems and explosions in this
game are a joke. Oh and the cutscenes in Fracture are beyond bad, this is not
the next generation game that we saw last year, Fracture has turned into a big
pile or rubble.
The one thing Fracture does have is 12 player online matches. There are eight
maps people can play on with eight different game types. If you like moving the
ground up and down then this is the perfect game for you. I never had a problem
getting into a game, but I did have a problem finding a game where people
actually wanted to play. Way too many people want to make fortresses with the
terrain raising gun.
Final Verdict
What happened to Fracture? The game sounded like a good idea while it was in
production. Once the demo came out I had second thoughts about it; however I
still wanted to give it a chance. It turns out the real game is just as bad as
the demo. Fracture is a glorified Playstation 2 game; don’t waste $60 on this
game.
