The strategy RPG that got a name for it by taking over a hundred hours to complete is back. Disgaea 3 is taking the Playstation 3 by storm with its unique gameplay and humor that will make you wet your pants. Is Disgaea 3 the perfect game for PS3 owners during this current dry spell of original games?

Long time fans of the Disgaea series will feel right at home when the game starts up. That is some of the problem of the game as well because it looks like the first two games. Apparently Disgaea 3 was going to be on the Playstation 2 but things got changed and the developers went ahead and added more, since a blu-ray disc can hold that much more. It is sort of a stab to the heat that this game would be on the PS3, though the price is ten dollars less than normal next generation video games ($49.99).

If you have a lot of time on your hands then Disgaea 3 is right for you. There is so much in this game your eyes are going to pop out of their sockets. The game deals with the son of the Overlord, Mao, who is wanting to defeat his father because he destroyed all of Mao’s video games, destroying countless hours of data. Now wanting to take down his father Mao gets help from his classmates and does what he can to seek revenge.

You control a team of characters and by this I mean a ton of characters. Disgaea 3 does have the occasional character joining your ranks, but the main team up comes from the characters you can create. After certain tasks in the game you’ll be able to create that character. Each character creation has you picking what letter class you want it to be, the more mana you put into the character the better it will be. There are almost endless opportunities in this game when it comes to your team.

Characters can also combine with your other characters to do special attacks. This is not new to the series, but now you can actually make certain characters like each other, giving you the chance to share their skills. You can earn new skills in the game by using mana, which lets you obtain new attacks with your characters, that is if you can find them out.

Leveling up in Disgaea 3 is just like every other game. The big different here is the level cap is 9,999. No I didn’t say that wrong, 9,999 is the highest level in this game. If you put in the hours you can have an army that could take down anyone with simple attacks. Take the time and build your army of God characters, it’s great.

Battles are just like other strategy role playing games. Along with the attacks I talked about above, you can use Geo Panels to gain super combos or change the flooring to help you out. The Geo Panels aspect of the game opens up a whole new world to these kind of RPGs. You can either put in a lot of strategy or you can just go through and destroy all the enemies. By gaining more combos though you can gain more items at the end of the battle.

When you are down with your characters you can buy numerous weapons, armor, and items from shops. The more money you spend at a shop the better equipment will be. It may sound like the game is forcing you to spend hours upon hours to beat the game and you would be right. If that sounds unfair to you then put on a happy face. Even by going to the nurse you can earn certain items in the game. See it pays to heal your characters as does it pay to spend your hard earn money.

Everything is all good and dandy but it all comes back to the first thing I mentioned before. The graphics are not up to pair with most Playstation 3 games. Don’t get me wrong the visuals are great. All of the colors are crisp and crystal clear; however I could see this on modern Playstation 2 game, if the developers took the time to create a good looking game.

What makes things bad is the cursor; it seems to shift the camera at certain points. It doesn’t completely ruin the entire game per say. There are stages where walls take over too much of the stage and the damn camera wants to go out of its way to screw you over. Gamer meet the wall, wall meet the gamer. You have a good chance of having some of your characters die because of these walls. The camera just does not want to cooperate with you and that should not happen with a strategy RPG.

Final Verdict
As much as Disgaea 3 disappointed me with certain aspects I still enjoyed the game a lot. For only $49.99 you would expect to get a short game that doesn’t seem to care anything. NIS has taken the price cut aspect and turned it around because Disgaea 3 is well worth the cost. Pick this game up and get ready to spend over a hundred hours of terrific gameplay.
