Fable II - Pub Games
Publisher: Microsoft
Developer: Lionhead Studios
Genre: Casino
Release Date: August 13, 2008
Platform: Xbox Live
Reviewer: Eric
Fable II doesn’t come out until October 21, 2008. Before we can get our hands
on one of this years most anticipated games we get a chance to build up our
characters before you even play Fable II. There are numerous items and weapons
to unlock, but is that really worth the ten dollar asking price?
There are fifteen items you can unlock in this game, ranging from tattoos to
apple pie. In order to unlock these items you’ll have to spend quite some time
playing different variations of three games. If that isn’t enough you will also
have to play tournaments, which is the same thing as before, this time you just
have more rounds than normal.
Before you start you make a character, well you actually pick a character from a
few different choices. This is just a character for the Pub Games; this will not
be your actual character when Fable II comes out. When you actually own Fable II
all you have to do is merge everything to your character. This really is a neat
idea doing this. Even though the idea sounds great the games in here tend to
loose their steam after no more than an hour.
If you pre-ordered Fable II then you got Pub Games for free. Since everyone
doesn’t like to pre-order games then you can spend $10 to buy the game on Xbox
Live. Frankly I do not think this game is worth the asking price, buying this
game on Xbox Live will have you feeling ripped off. If you are going to buy
Fable II then pre-order the game, do not buy this game for some fun casino style
games.
Fortune’s Tower is the first game I am going to touch base on. This game is
pretty much a rip off of solitaire. Lionhead Studios did spice things up, but
all you are doing is hitting the same button until you feel unlucky. There
really doesn’t seem to be any skill in this game, it is all about chance. Most
of the time you will feel like the game is cheating. For some reason the more
you loose it seems like you will hit the A button more and more. Fortune’s Tower
is the best game out of the whole package.
Keystone is roulette with new designs. Place your bet on the table where ever
you want and roll the dice (Lionhead Studios changed things up again). Again
this game is all about risk, plus things seem to move real slowly when compared
to the other games.
Finally we have Spinnerbox, or also known as the slots, just with different
graphics. Again just like the other games you will hit A over and over again.
This game tends play unfair the most. The worst part is you have to play this
game to unlock items in Fable II so get ready to exercise your finger.
Tournament mode has you playing all the games in tournament mode. Spinnerbox is
almost unplayable, you have to sit there and hit the A button for 100 turns.
Half the time you will never win a single tournament, when you hit the 80 mark
you will slowly see your place in the tournament drop further and further. If
you enjoy the Pub Games then the tournaments will be a blast. For those just
playing these to unlock items in Fable II you will slowly despise everything
about this game after one tournament.
To unlock new tournaments and different ways to play the three Pub Games you
have to play the game for hours. By going in debut you can unlock a new version
of Keystone, which just lets you bet more money. Sounds pretty bad right? It is
but if you want to unlock all the items then you have to deal with it.
Oh yeah I didn’t forget to talk about the multiplayer features. Pub Games has no
multiplayer functions at all. You are running solo with this game.
Final Verdict
If you didn’t pre-order Fable II then there is no reason to buy this game. These
three casino games are not fun. You will find yourself causing problems for your
character in Fable II; Pub Games seems to go out of its way to make you loose.
Fable II - Pub Games is a great idea, though Lionhead Studios dropped the ball
when it came to the gameplay.
