Too Human is one of those games that you will either love or hate. Silicon
Knights has been promising us this game for quite some time and the wait is
finally over. With similar gameplay to other great action adventure games, can
this exclusive title to the Xbox 360 wow owners with its science fiction
storyline?
The game takes place in a world where science fiction is the star of the show.
As Baldus, a member of the Aesir gods who take care of all mankind in this long,
lasting war. The Aesir’s are a technology based group of gods that seem to rely
too much on what they have, rather than their actual smarts. The game does
explore some interesting plot thickeners, but the same thing stands for the
whole time frame of Too Human.
Problem one with Too Human is the story. I enjoy the science fiction theme that
the game has; it is defiantly a top feature in this game. But the story just
seems to be nonexistence at times, then all of the sudden the story is there.
When the story is trying to be just like the Lord of the Rings you will run into
a thick wall. What in the world is going on? Be prepared to ask yourself that
question quite a bit during this game. I was really hoping for a better story
from Silicon Knights, Too Human seems to have a storyline that best fits one of
those cheap games you can buy for $20 or less.
Too Human is intended to be the first game in a trilogy. To help keep gamers
interested they added in a mix of flashbacks and interactive cut scenes. All of
these sequences are nice additions to the game, mainly since Too Human has
minimal loading time. Since the story isn’t real friendly we won’t be able to
fully understand the game until the next two installments come out. Silicon
Knights have created this game as if everyone is already going to buy all the
games.
Something unique in Too Human is the controllers. At first the two thumbstick
aspect is strange; the left stick moves your character while the right one
attacks. This is extremely confusing at first. Once you play the game for a few
hours (yes it takes that long to get into the thumbstick aspect) you will feel
right at home. Too Human is pretty much a console version of Diablo, minus the
keyboard and mouse. Once you get the hang of things you will find a game that
has complex combos and smooth button reactions.
Silicon Knights also added in another unique feature that will upset most
gamers. The camera in this game is a battle. There are numerous camera angles
you can choose from, all of which don’t seem to mean much. Whenever you change
the camera view you will see the same settings you had before. Too Human
seriously has one camera angle, period. I think Silicon Knights should either
release a patch to get rid of those camera options or they should fix the camera
problems.
When you finish off a group of monsters you will find a bunch of treasures to
collect, just like Diablo. If you are not a fan of gameplay like this then Too
Human will start to annoy you after the first area. You are going to run around
a room a few times, collecting treasures and finding different structures you
can destroy for treasures. A good amount of time will be spent into going this,
dungeon crawler gamers will fall in love right away, trust me.
Most of the items you will pick up are either equipment based or blue prints.
The blue prints let you create new weapons. Usually these blue prints create
much better items than you already having. You can also find runes, once again
something Diablo fans will find very familiar.
Even before you start the game you get the chance to pick your character class.
There are five male character classes right now (what about the women?). Each
class has its own strengths and weaknesses. Thankfully there is a class that is
averaged out, making it the best choice for beginners. The five character aspect
in the game defiantly gives you plenty of replay value.
Every character also has a skill tree. How you build your characters is up to
you, but Diablo fans will defiantly feel right at home with this. With each
level you own you’ll be able to put use to points. The skill tree is easy to
understand and it is a lot of fun trying to get that certain skill that you feel
is the best.
One very disappointing aspect in Too Human are the stages. Everything is
extremely linier. Just follow the path and you will beat the area. You can not
fall off the stage and no matter how hard you try you can not jump over tiny
walls or barrels. This makes exploration a tad boring at times, it almost feels
like you are playing a SNES game that looks pretty. Silicon Knights should have
added more development in the stages, this is uncalled for.
Too Human does have good graphics and they look amazing on a high definition
television. This aspect does not make the game that much better, the two player
online cooperative mode is amazing. Playing Too Human online feels like it is a
whole new game; almost better than the so called storyline mode. All the story
elements have been removed, all you and are friend do is go around and kick the
living crap out of everything in site. This game is meant to be played online
and it shows just after twenty minutes of online play.
Final Verdict
This is defiantly one of those games that you will either love or hate. A lot of
games have felt that way this year and it is a real shame. Too Human was hyped
up to be one of those games that gamers will adore for years. If you can look
past the problems Too Human has then you will find a good game.
