Instead of having samurai’s hacking through hordes of enemies, Namco Bandai
is bringing out a hack-n-slash game with robots. Dynasty Warriors: Gundam is the
game that Gundam fans have been waiting for, but is there really a point to have
the Gundam Universe in a Dynasty Warriors game?
Why in the world does Dynasty Warriors have to be in front of the Gundam name? I
really don’t see why Namco Bandai has done this, however there are some people
who buy games based on the name. This game is pretty much like every other
Dynasty Warriors game. Instead of the normal background and character designs,
we have Gundom from head to toe.
This is a straight forward game with simple controls. You pick a character and
then a Gundam suit. When you are satisfied with your choices you get to slash
through hundreds upon hundreds of robots. The formula is the same thing we have
seen for years; there is nothing new to this game, other than the characters and
backgrounds (the more I say this I start to hate myself).
There are a few different modes to pick from at the start of the game. There is
Original Mode, Official Mode, Versus Mode, Gallery and Options. This is all
great and all, but most of these features are the same thing. Instead of playing
the game through a so called direct story to the Gundam series, we can pick a
mode that is a straight hack-n-slash. All of these missions just start out and
you have to kill everything in sight.
I am not too familiar with the Gundam Universe, but that doesn’t really matter
when it comes to this game. This game does have some story elements to it, which
will please Gundam fans. I couldn’t help but notice that the story is too
simple, here is the good Gundam, now go kill the one or two bad Gundam’s in the
stage. No real ground breaking story moments, the voices of the characters are
raised at points, though it really doesn’t help the story too much. Dynasty
Warriors: Gundam should only be played as a video game, not a way to learn new
or old elements in the Gundam Universe.
If you have another friend that loves the Gundam series or hack-n-slash games
then you can have some split screen action. They get to pick their own character
and Gundam suit too. Once the multiplayer modes start, the fun factor from both
players literally goes from 100% to 50%. Split screen? Come on, honestly that
isn’t the biggest problem. There are some frame problems and the game seems to
run a little on the sluggish sides during random points.
More flaws in the game occur during huge battles, something the Dynasty Warriors
series is known for. Whenever you are ready to attack a group of robots you will
fall right on the ground. If a bullet hits you from all the way in the other
corner, you will fall. I have fallen sometimes and I didn’t even see a bullet.
This is freaking annoying because all I wanted to do was kill with my laser
sword. That isn’t the worst part, when you fight bosses you will fall down so
many times, and during that time the enemies can attack you still. How come when
I try to attack guys on the ground I can’t seem to do any damage?
If you put the game on the easiest setting then you will be treated with simple
AI. The game is way too easy that the enemy will stand still, waiting to die by
your sword. I haven’t tried the game on the hardest setting yet, but I am pretty
sure the difficult level won’t be note worthy of anything.
As you play the game you can unlock character profiles, Gundam profiles, and
other pointless extras that won’t even please Gundam fans. It is pretty lame
having to click through a few screens to see these extras. I would have rather
of seen online play than these so called great extras.
Final Verdict
This is the same kind of game, but instead of the same old backgrounds and
characters, we can enjoy Gundam related objects. Hack-n-slash games are usually
fun for a week or two at most, but after that they don’t really have anything
else to offer. Gundam is a plain and simple, just make sure you know what you’re
getting into.
