Nick Fury is back! Fury’s absence has struck some possibilities with the
recent Secret Invasion storyline. In the latest issue of the Mighty Avengers we
learn what happened when he left and what he’s been up to. Is Fury part of the
invasion or is he trying to prevent the Skrull invasion?
Several months ago Nick Fury got together a team of superheroes (Wolverine,
Daredevil, Spider-Man, Captain America, Black Widow and Luke Cage) to go
investigate Latveria. While there the team of heroes Fury got together learned
more than they could handle. Fury betrayed the team, but his reasoning is
understandable.
Even before the Skrull’s started to clone themselves as Marvel characters, Fury
knew what was happening. Instead of seeking the help of his former friends, Nick
Fury acts as a vigilante hero. Will Fury continue to take things into his own
matter or will he try to contact anybody else?
This issue felt more like a one shot for the current Secret Invasion storyline.
The only way you can compare this to a normal Mighty Avengers comic would have
to be some of the characters that are featured in here. In general it seems like
Brian Michael Bendis made this feel more like a New Avengers issue than a Mighty
Avengers.
If you haven’t guessed already this issue is entirely about Nick Fury. Fans of
the Mighty Avengers series might be a little disappointed with this, but I
wasn’t. The last few pages of this issue make the entire issue. Without spoiling
anything it might seem like Fury knows possible Skrull’s. If this is the case
then the Secret Invasion is about to get very interesting.
Former Daredevil artist and current Halo: Uprising artist Alex Maleev has the
privilege of doing the art in this issue. Maleev’s art is more on the rough
side, almost looks gritty. I’m not use to this kind of art for the most part,
but it goes pretty well with the mysterious feel this issue has.
Final Verdict
The Mighty Avengers first tie-in to the Secret Invasion is good in standards,
however it doesn’t deal with the Mighty Avengers too much. It is real great to
see Nick Fury back and he seems to have a major role in the current invasion
storyline. If things keep up like this we are in for a hell of a story.
