The death of Captain America shaped the Marvel universe forever. When the
second act of the ongoing Captain America series ended we were left with a huge
shocker. Ed Brubaker delivers another top notch issue on what is looking to be
another great storyline.
Bucky Barnes is suffering the consequences from his first mission as the new
Captain America. Instead of the issue focusing on him it seems Bucky is taking a
break. That doesn’t mean we don’t get to see much of him, there is a dream
sequence that should fill in some loose ends.
Captain America replacements Falcon and Clint Barton make a return to the
series. Both of these characters were heavily rumored to be the next Captain
America. Barton (Hawkeye/Ronin) was thought to have the job, but things changed.
Not to worry the dialogue between Falcon and Barton is very crucial to the
series.
The Red Skull has taken a back seat in the past two issues. He’s been around,
but not as much as one would like. Ed Brubaker must have known this because the
Red Skull is back in full force. We learn about the Red Skull from WWII until
present time. This villain has been doing his nasty deeds for some time now.
I really like how Brubaker is adding in some of today’s real life problems into
the series. The Red Skull talks about certain topics as oil prices and
elections. Instead of just throwing these topics out there for wow effect
Brubaker makes everything look so natural. Just when one might have thought the
Red Skull was not a threat anymore he comes back and does this.
Steve Epting is back doing the art in this issue and hopefully he keeps it up.
In no way was Butch Guice doing a bad job, but goddamn you have to admit that
Epting was born to do the Captain America series. Another top notch issue from
Epting, his art shines in this issue.
Final Verdict
Captain America fans thought the series was over when their hero died. After
four issues I finally feel that Bucky was the best choice as a replacement. Even
though ht wasn’t in the issue for too long his presence was still there, you
could feel it. The story really progresses nicely in this issue so if you
haven’t started reading this series you better start now.
