X-Men: Divided We Stand #1 of 2
Release Date: April 16, 2008
Publisher: Marvel Comics
Storyline: Divided We Stand
Price: $3.99
Reviewer: Eric
Instead of giving us a bunch of mini series with different X-Men characters
we are getting two comic books. Within these pages we get to learn the story
about so many mutants that have been affected with the Messiah Complex
aftermath. As predictable as these stories may be they still shed some light on
some characters.
The first issue ties up the loose ends with the disbanded New X-Men. This was
supposed to be the youngest and last X-Men team, but Scott Summers proved that
wrong (see Young X-Men #1 review). Since the New X-Men series ended after the
Messiah Complex (why?), it would make sense that most of the stories deal with
those characters.
For a hefty $3.99 price tag you would expect a lot in here, right? Wrong. The
stories that end up being good are the shortest and the longest stories are the
worst. Go figure, right? Having different story tellers and artists for each of
these stories was a good idea. Frankly though I don’t think there should have
been five stories, that was pushing it.
Craig Kyle and Chris Yost’s story entitled “Home” is the worst story. How many
people gave a shit about Nehzno? Storm and the Black Panther welcome Nehzno home
to Wakanda. We learn more about Nehzno’s past, which only bored me. Even Sana
Takeda’s art suffers here too, this story was a disaster.
As much as I enjoyed Cannonball beating the shit out of some strangers in his
story I enjoyed “Blend In” the most. Anole was one of the few members of the New
X-Men that I truly liked. In his story you will just be blown away by Skottie
Young’s story. His story about a mutant, trying to live a normal life again has
the most character in it. For a former member of the New X-Men this story was
the darkest.
Nightcrawler’s story just made me made for one reason. He is a main character in
the Uncanny X-Men series and he is still being used. Why did they waste time
with him? What about Gambit? How about Rouge? There were better choices for this
issue; hopefully the next issue will have a better character line up.
Final Verdict
I think the asking price for this issue might be a little too much. Only two of
the five stories were real interesting, but one of them was just a big ass
kicking. The Messiah Complex changed the X-Men forever and thankfully some of
the characters in here realize one man is to blame for this disbanding of the
X-Men.
I can’t recommend this issue too much because of the price, however if you’re
keeping up with the Divided We Stand storyline then you better pick this up.
