In Post-Messiah Complex there are no young X-Men left. Out of no where Marvel
pulled the plug on the New X-Men series, leaving room for a new breed of young
mutants to come and wow us with their abilities. Enter the Young X-Men. Are they
a force to be scared of or did Marvel drop the ball already?
Cyclops goes around and tries to find a new group of X-Men. Instead of taking
the best from all of the other X groups, Cyclops goes ahead and recruits a group
of young mutants. The team features three members from the New X-Men, Rockslide,
Blindfold and Dust, but who are the rest?
You don’t want to know who the rest are. Cyclops either has no sense in mutants
or the mutant picking is running slim. The Young X-Men is a group of new mutants
(minus the three I mentioned above) that don’t seem to have any personality.
Thankfully one of the mutants Cyclops found was another mutant with Wolverine
like claws. Why must every X group have a mutant with claws?
I’ve grown to enjoy the New X-Men while I read the Messiah Complex. Like
everybody else that read this huge storyline, I was confused when the New X-Men
series wasn’t mentioned in the Divided We Stand storyline. There was no real
goodbye from the team, they vanished. Whose hand do I have to shake for this
occurrence?
In the entire issue Cyclops is going from one place to another, finding the
worst possible mutants for his new group of X-Men. He let’s them all know that
this is it, there will be no more young X-Men teams after this one. For some
reason I don’t believe him.
At the very end of the issue we learn why Cyclops is doing this. No he isn’t
trying to fix his mistakes from the Messiah Complex, he already has a mission
for these young group of mutants. The comics twist at the end really didn’t
shock me, mainly since the mutants they are about to face mean as much to me as
garbage. This should be an easy battle here, trust me.
Yanick Paquette’s art work is boring, but that might be due to the fact they
don’t have much to work with. All of the mutants look lame and Cyclops doesn’t
look like a good leader/Professor Xavier. This series needed to catch a break
and it doesn’t look like it’ll catch one from the art.
Final Verdict
Young X-Men is a new ongoing series that is hoping to make its claim from the
Divided We Stand storyline. I don’t see a lot coming from here, but things might
change. As for now though you should only pick this up if you are keeping up
with the Divided We Stand story.
