What the hell is up with a brand new comic book series with Wolverine? Not
only is this a new comic book series with Wolverine, but it is a friendly one.
How can these two things work out? I have no idea, but Wolverine: First Class
isn’t half bad.
There is a new bunch of X-Men at Xavier’s school for the gifted. Kitty Pryde,
one of the newest mutants, is having a great time at the school. She is meeting
new friends and is experiencing how she can use her mutant abilities without
having any problems. There is one mutant though that she doesn’t get too along
with.
Wolverine is the outcast in Xavier’s school. He doesn’t get along too well with
the others and he won’t play any games with them whenever they need another
person. Wolverine just likes to keep to himself; it’s that plain and simple.
For being a Wolverine comic book it seems like this series is revolving around
Kitty Pryde more. I think the reason for Wolverine’s name is to sell more
issues. The last Kitty Pryde series didn’t sell like hot cakes so Marvel
probably didn’t want another repeat of this.
I don’t understand why everyone is treating Wolverine like a monster. Maybe it’s
the way Fred Van Lente is writing, but to me it seems like Wolverine is Rudolph
the Red Nose Reindeer. Is Wolverine really going to go crazy and kill everybody
in the school? I doubt it.
Kitty’s first mission as an X-Man is with Wolverine. Oh no how are these two
going to work together? Some of the biggest drama in here occurs when Professor
Xavier makes this decision. If you can get past this part then you’ll find
yourself reading a decent comic book.
The art isn’t half bad in here. Andrea Di Vito does a great job drawing the
Wolverine we all remember from back in the mid nineties. All of the characters
look pretty good also. Some of the minor details are slacking just a little.
Final Verdict
Wolverine might not be the best choice for a friendly comic book series, but
what can you do? Marvel needs to find new ways to shove Wolverine down our
throats and it looks like Wolverine: First Class might stick around for awhile.
The general story isn’t all that bad and surprisingly the drama that we are use
to from the X-Men: First Class series is almost nonexistent.
